Concrete Pours Begin on $105 Million Mississippi Prison

November 8, 2007

Foundation pouring began this week for the new Adams County Correctional Center in Mississippi. Flintco, Inc. is the general contractor on the project. Como, Mississippi-based Cross Concrete is the concrete contractor.

Walls for the building are being pre-cast offsite, with the foundation itself being poured onsite – often starting as early as 2 a.m. to save construction workers from midday heat, as well as to help get the concrete out to cure during cooler temperatures.

A belt conveyor with a reach of 80 feet was used to distribute sand fill to areas where the foundation will be poured. The conveyor helped speed up the process for placing the sand fill, and helped protect sensitive areas.

The construction team has also resorted to over-excavation and refill in some areas to counteract problems with soil stabilization, including a 90-foot wide, 110-foot long, 12-foot-deep area near the center of the site in which the soil held too much water.

The overall project cost is $105 million.
